Dynamic QR Codes

Blank codes

Print first, assign later. Sometimes you know you need twenty stickers — for shelves, windows, market stalls, table tents — before you know which product each one will sell. Blank codes are for that: print a batch now, put them up, then walk round with your phone and decide what each one does. Until then, they’re harmless: a scan opens your shop. Pro

1. Create a batch

On QR Codes → All QR Codes, click Create QR code and choose Blank codes. The Create blank codes dialog asks for:

  • How many — up to 500 in one run (10 to start with).
  • Label — a prefix, “Blank” by default. Codes are numbered after it: Blank 1, Blank 2… A later batch with the same prefix carries on where the last one stopped, so numbers never repeat. You give each code its real name when you assign it.
  • Campaign (optional) — put the whole batch in a campaign now, or leave it empty and choose per code when you assign it.

Click Create blank codes. A progress bar runs for big batches; when it’s done the dialog offers Print these N codes (Print this code for one).

2. Print them with their address

The print dialog opens with Code address → Print each code’s address under it already on for blank codes. Leave it on: the address printed under each code (e.g. yourstore.com/?qrcw=k7m2xa, or yourstore.com/q/k7m2xa with short links) is how you tell your stickers apart later, and you can type it if a camera won’t cooperate. All the usual layout options apply — see Print your codes.

Need to reprint? On All QR Codes, the Unassigned view (it appears while you have blank codes) lists every code still waiting; tick them and use Print selected.

What a blank code does before it’s assigned

  • A scan opens your shop — no product, no coupon, no message. Nobody hits an error page.
  • The scan is counted, so you can already see which spots get attention.
  • On All QR Codes the code’s status is Unassigned, with the note Blank code — scans open the shop until it’s assigned. It’s never listed in an order’s parcel-insert box.

3. Assign each code with Scan a code

Once the stickers are up, open QR Codes → Scan a code on your phone (log in to your WordPress admin in the phone’s browser), tap Start camera and point it at a sticker. The phone reads the code itself — the scan isn’t counted. For a blank code, the card shows Assign this code:

  • What it does — Adds a product to the cart (pick a product, or a variation to add that exact option) or Opens a page (link code) (enter a destination on your store or another website).
  • Coupon (optional) — not available for a page on another website.
  • Label (where you put it) — e.g. “Window — Kyiv store”. Leave it empty to keep “Blank 3”.
  • Campaign (optional).

Tap Assign this code. You’ll see Assigned. Scan the next one., the camera is ready for the next sticker, and an Assigned just now list keeps track of your round (it’s kept on that phone only). From the next scan, the sticker does exactly what you chose.

At your desk instead? Every blank code on All QR Codes has an Assign row action. It opens that code in Scan a code, ready to fill in — handy when the label under the sticker is all you need.

Assigning is one-way: an assigned code can’t go back to blank. To change it afterwards, use Edit like any other code — printed copies follow. Pointing a code at another website needs a store manager or administrator.

FAQ

How do I find which printed code is which?

Point Scan a code at it. The card shows the code’s label, what it does, its coupon, campaign, scans and the address it was printed with — and checking it doesn’t count as a scan. No phone to hand? Read the six characters at the end of the address printed under the sticker (that’s why the address option is on for blank codes) and search for them on All QR Codes, or type them into Scan a code under Type the code instead.

What happens to blank codes if my Pro licence isn’t active?

Every code keeps working: assigned codes do what you set, and unassigned ones keep opening your shop. If the licence is cancelled, deactivated or moved to another site, creating and assigning blank codes and the Scan a code screen come back once it’s active again.
