Dynamic QR Codes

Create your first code

Creating a code takes about two minutes: pick a product, optionally add a coupon, click Create QR code, download it, and scan it with your phone. On a new store the Get started panel walks you through the same three steps and ticks them off as you go.

Create a code

  1. Go to QR Codes → All QR Codes and click Create QR code.
  2. Pick a product and click Open its QR codes box. (No products yet? The dialog offers Add a product instead.)
  3. The product opens at its QR codes box, with a live preview of your code already drawn.
  4. Fill in what you need — every field is optional:
    • Variation (variable products) — choose a size or colour to add that exact option to the cart, or leave it empty to let the customer choose on the product page.
    • Coupon — any coupon that applies to this product (expired coupons and ones at their usage limit aren’t listed). Leave it on No coupon for a plain “scan to add to cart” code. With Pro you can create a coupon without leaving the box.
    • Label — internal, not shown to customers; it helps you tell codes apart, e.g. “Hoodie — hangtag”.
    • Caption — printed under the code on downloads and prints, e.g. “Scan for 20% off”.
    • Campaign Pro — group the code with others to compare them. See Campaigns.
  5. Click Create QR code. The code is saved and its new row in Saved codes is highlighted: “QR code created. Download or print it from its row below.”

You can also skip step 1 and 2: open any product (Products → pick one) and scroll to its QR codes box. The preview uses your site design from QR design; with Pro, the Design button next to it styles this one code before you create it.

On the free plan you can create one QR code per product (one per variation on variable products), and a retired code still counts. Once a product has its code, Create QR code is disabled and the box says “Free plan: 1 QR code per product.” (or “Free plan: 1 QR code per variation.”). Pro has unlimited codes.

More kinds of code Pro

With Pro, Create QR code first asks what the code should do when it’s scanned, with four cards:

  • For a product — the steps above: a scan puts the product in the cart, with a coupon if you add one.
  • For a link — a scan opens a page: a sale, your Instagram, any website.
  • Bundle — one scan puts several products in the cart.
  • Blank codes — print stickers now, decide what each one does later.

Links, bundles and bulk creation from the Products list are covered on More ways to use codes; blank codes have their own page, Blank codes.

Download, add to Media Library or print

Everything you do with a saved code is on its row — in the product’s Saved codes and on All QR Codes. Open the Download menu:

  • Download PNG — an image for flyers, posters, social posts and most print jobs.
  • Download SVG — a vector file that stays sharp at any size; best for a printer or a designer.
  • Add to Media Library — only if you want the image in posts, pages or emails. It then reads Re-save to Media Library and View in Media Library.

Downloads are drawn in your browser at the moment you click, frame, border text and caption included, so they always match the code’s current design. With Pro, the row’s Print button makes a print-ready PDF — see Print your codes.

Scan it with your phone

Before you print a batch, scan the code with your phone — from the screen is fine. You should land in your store’s cart with the right product, and the coupon applied: exactly what your customers will see. Your test scan counts as a visit, like any other scan.

Something off? A coupon that won’t apply, an out-of-stock product or a page cache are the usual causes — see Troubleshooting.

Change it after printing

Your code is dynamic: the address inside it never changes, so copies already printed follow your edits from the next scan. Click Edit on the code’s row to open the Edit QR code dialog, change what you need, then Save changes. On the free plan you can change:

  • Coupon — swap it for another one, or remove it.
  • Label — your internal name for it.
  • Caption — used on new downloads and prints (copies already printed keep the caption they were printed with).
  • Look — Use the current site design to restyle it.

Pro can also change the product or variation, the campaign and the code’s own design. Every field is described on Manage your codes.

Retire it when the offer ends

Set the code’s Status to Retired in the Edit dialog, or click Retire on its row in All QR Codes. A retired code applies no coupon and adds nothing to the cart; its scans go to the product page (or the shop) with the note “This QR code offer has ended.” Click Reactivate to bring it back — nothing is lost.

Upgrading from version 1.x? Codes printed back then keep working, and you can edit or retire them the same way.
